The Broken Javelin – May 2025 Update

We’re making progress! For anyone who doesn’t know the story of the Broken Javelin, be sure to check out this evergreen post for the whole story.

This month has been all about editing and starting to get the gears in motion for TBJ’s full publication later this year. Shaking off the rust hasn’t been an issue, to be honest; if anything it’s been a benefit to revisit the text with fresh eyes after a while off.

I’m also getting the website up and running again, so bear with me as the links etc. get updated. By the time sample chapters start coming out I promise this place will be looking at least a little better!

One of the biggest things to figure out when self-publishing a book is whether to go with Amazon Direct or another service. I’ll be honest, I don’t love the idea of giving Amazon total control over my book’s visibility and distribution, but at the same time they’ve pretty much cornered the market so there doesn’t always seem to be much of a choice. The current plan is to keep researching and decide next month when publication is getting closer. Aka no plan.

I’m also debating how and when to launch the paperback and/or hardcover versions of the book. These will take some additional design hours (and dollars) so we’ll see how much I want to commit to that. There will certainly be a paperback, but the timing is another matter with getting proofs and all the associated work that goes into that.

Other updates:

  • I just got the cover typography design back and it looks great! Be sure to stay tuned for the cover reveal a little later this year!
  • Editing progress: 7/50 chapters complete!

Check back next month for more updates. Cheers!
