The Story of The Broken Javelin (Start here!)

Note: I refer to The Broken Javelin as TBJ frequently and without warning, do not be alarmed.

So… What is The Broken Javelin?

This book started way back in 2020, shortly after I (and my prospective publisher) decided my first full-length novel wasn’t worth publishing. I had started a rough plot and a few scenes of TBJ, and I put the draft together over the next couple of years, with many re-starts and major rewrites, which I’m sure I will be discussing on this blog. It probably shouldn’t have taken so long, but I was exploring a few other concepts at the time – this book simply won out by becoming my favorite.

TBJ was published for the first time in 2023 through Wraithmarked, an excellent independent publishing house. We parted ways on good terms due to, essentially, a mismatch between my book’s target audience and Wraithmarked’s audience. So now I have the rights to the book, and although I’ve been pursuing other projects for the past year or so, I’ve decided it’s time to re-launch TBJ to the world.

I’m taking my time to do a re-edit of the original text for multiple reasons. First of all, the book is simply too long – keeping it long was a creative decision made in conjunction with WM originally, but I’ve decided some parts of the original could have been improved by getting shorter or disappearing altogether. Second, I’m just a little bit too much of a perfectionist to simply re-publish a book without making some changes. And third, it’s just plain fun to go back into the world of TBJ, making tweaks to the world here and there, bringing out certain aspects of the characters I didn’t explore enough before; in short I really enjoy this book, and working on it is something I enjoy.

There won’t be any major plot changes or new characters or anything crazy in this re-edit. I’m considering a name change here and there, maybe tweaking some of the history or the politics of the realm’s past, but overall this is mostly a line edit. The book’s core is pretty solid, and I certainly enjoy the characters, so I’m hopeful that I can get through this republication without many huge, time-consuming changes to work through.

If you happen to be one of those kind readers who purchased the first iteration of the book, I would love to hear from you – since I’m re-publishing the book under a different ISBN, you won’t automatically get a new version through Amazon, where the previous version was published and subsequently unpublished. But I will honor all previous purchases with a free copy of the new book, so be sure to reach out here, in the comments, or on my website when the book launches to claim your copy anytime!

Recent Updates

April 15, 2025: Getting in touch with some cover designers to finalize the typography for the new cover. I can’t do the final print cover until the editing is finished, since the print cover design requires the final page count, but the ebook/front cover will be a great start.

May 1, 2025: Editing away this week – 3/70 chapters complete!

May 9, 2025: Editing continues – 5/70 chapters complete. Getting set up for all the publishing stuff, ISBN’s and so on. And most importantly – I got the cover design back with new typography and it looks great!

The Blurb

The elevator pitch for The Broken Javelin, always in development. Let me know what you think!

The Javelin should have been the sort of assassin other killers looked up to.

Krivi san Kosare has the fickle trust of the Crown, a weighty title of his own, and the Reach, a power so extraordinary that even Krivi’s victims would swear it couldn’t exist—until the moment it kills them. But few look up to the Javelin anymore, and even his royal friends have grown tired of his mistakes.

Dispatched to the far reaches of the kingdom to eradicate the head of a dangerous rebellion, Krivi is determined to atone for his failures. He will see this “Scholar” slain, return home to bask in the honor he deserves, and prove himself once more to the Crown.

Or at least that was the plan…

When Krivi stumbles on the first new Reacher in a generation, he discovers not only a little girl with power enough to shake the world, but a child enamored with the very rebels he’s been sent to destroy. Finding himself torn between his duty to the Crown and developing the girl’s miraculous powers and his duty, Krivi slowly uncovers a web of lies and betrayal woven among those he’s always trusted the most.”

A nice review from the book’s initial release in 2023:
